Mortgage Switching Calculator
Compare your current home loan against an alternative to see whether switching could save you money after fees. Factor in discharge costs, application fees and the remaining term to get a realistic picture of the benefit of refinancing.
Calculators are provided by VisionAbacus through the MFAA. Results are estimates only, are based on the accuracy of the information entered, and don’t constitute a quote or loan approval.
How To Use It
Using the mortgage switching calculator
- Enter your current loan balance, rate, remaining term and ongoing fees.
- Enter the new loan's rate and fees, plus the costs of switching such as discharge and government registration fees.
- Look at how long it takes for the saving to cover the switching costs, not just the monthly difference.
FAQ
Mortgage Switching calculator questions
When is refinancing my home loan worth it?
Refinancing is usually worth it when the interest saved over the next few years clearly exceeds the cost of switching. Those costs include discharge fees, government registration fees and any break costs on a fixed loan. This calculator shows the break-even point for your figures. If you have not reviewed your loan in two years or more, it is worth checking.
Can I ask my current lender for a better rate instead of switching?
Yes, and it is worth doing first. Lenders often offer existing customers a lower rate when asked, particularly if you can show a competing offer. If your lender will not move, or the offer still falls short, refinancing becomes the stronger option. We can give you comparison figures from other lenders to take into that conversation, or handle the switch if needed.
